Applications of containers

Major application

Major application of sea containers is as packing for sea, rail road transportation. Containers that we supply are used as SOC (Shipper's Own Container) in various cases.

Transport and temporary storage of IMDG / ADR 1st class cargoes. Those are military and defense products. But party stuff like non military fireworks as well. All those products are subject to strict control all over the world. They require permits for export, import, transit, transshipment, transport, storage and handling. As a rule the transport packing for those goods is needed longer than provided by container lines. Sea containers are irreplaceable tool in keeping goods safe towards moisture, theft, damages, open fire of sparks, and or mixing with other substances. Longer free period is also a must for those products and our containers satisfy such demand. Our containers ensure that such goods are quickly and easily loaded, lashed, dunnaged, secured, and easily checked, counted, received by only checking the untouched seal.
Transportation and temporary storage of military goods without IMDG / ADR class. Same are subject to same kind of control as dangerous goods without the risk of self-ignition and explosion.

 Transportation and temporary storage of project cargoes. It is usually hardly predictable how much is the reasonable time for use of a container when at infrastructure or other construction site. At the same time goods need to be secured against atmospheric conditions and other risks on the site. Depending on the period for use and company policy clients can choose between purchase and rental of containers.

 Any other casein which for some reasons use of shippers own containers. If for example container liners do not accept the cargo or the destination.

New Containers

It is good to know that more than 90 % of all containers in the world are manufactured in China. Newly manufactured containers are certified by classification society and receive 5 years validity, marked on their CSC plate.

All new containers are moved to Europe with cargo. Cargoes not damaging the internal surfaces of the container such as textile products are preferred but sometimes other cargoes are also used. It is usual that a "new” container in Europe has had minimum 6 handlings up to the depot it is stored for sale as well as minimum one loading of cargo inside and off-loading. And to be delivered to its first customer for purchase or rental it will be one more time loaded on a truck and offloaded in buyer/lessee premises.
It is possible that small traces of those handlings and loading are seen on the container.

Transportation of new containers is done whenever possible and appropriate. Upon order from a customer or in case of demand and when there is a container line ready and able to use SOC (Shipper's Own Container). It takes sometimes 3-6 months from date of manufacturing till date it is positioned in a depot for sale in Europe. Therefore containers manufactured in the current and previous year are traded as NEW.

Containers with CSC plate within the initial 5 years validity but manufactured 2 and more years before are offered as "newer”.

Used Containers

Containers that are used but in good condition, have their door rubber sealings in shape, are without openings on the roof or on the sides, have their sides and roof with normal geometry, have functioning and in good shape door locks, have their vertical pillars and horizontal bars in good shape, have robust and properly functioning fittings are offered as used cargo worthy containers.

Such containers might have weldings or welded steel pieces on the sides or on the roof, or have newly or different colour paintings on their sides or roof. Partial repairs or replacement of their floor covering can also be seen. Some of them can have rust spots due to aggressive environment towards metal in all seas and oceans they are carried through.
Containers are offered „As Is” when the offering party cannot engage with their outer or internal appearance or overall condition. Such containers can be with some damages on vertical or horizontal structures, have too much rust on their doors that cannot be repaired, have their door rubber sealing missing or seriously damaged and or other damages that obstruct containers from being certified for international transportation. Sometimes cargo worthy containers are offered "as is” due to lack of info regarding their condition.

Safety rules and practical recommendations

Each container has a plate usually of brass. This table shows reference for its approval to be used under custom seal. It shows also safety data as per CSC (Containers safety convention). You can read more about CSC here (https://www.bic-code.org/csc-plate/). Upon manufacturing each container gets 5 year validity. Upon expiry of same the container is periodically examined for validity renewal. Educated surveyor inspects the container for the condition of its vertical pillars and horizontal bars and the status of its fittings. The strength of the floor is also under examination as well as sides and roof. Surveyor examines the locks and rubber sealing of the doors. Newly added validity period is marked on the CSC plate by putting an ACEP sticker showing latest date of next inspection. More about ACEP you can read here. (https://www.bic-code.org/acep/).

It is good to know that that leveling of the floor is essential for door proper opening and closing. Best is to have flat surface but leveling of 6 points – 4 on each container corner and 2 in the middle can also do.
The easiest way of off-loading a container from truck is when the truck with container stands on the place where container should finally rest. Crane stands perpendicular to the truck/container. Crane lifts container up, the truck moves forward and the crane drops the container on the initially desired place.
It is good to know that 20 foot containers can be delivered by self loading/ discharge truck. Such truck has limited capacity towards the distance from the truck where it can put the container but is still good opportunity to save costs and time and avoid complicated coordination between loading, discharging points, truck and crane. In some countries self loading and discharge of 40 foot containers is also possible. In Bulgaria this is not yet practice but we hope to have it soon.
